Hop Queen

Sandy Avila is one of an ever-growing number of women active in the lowrider scene, not as the wives or girlfriends of male lowriders but as builders and owners of lowrider vehicles themselves. She is the president of the Pasadena-based Lady Lowriders Car Club, which was founded in 2021.

Avila purchased this Oldsmobile in 2018 and set to work crafting it into “Simply Beautiful.” She rebuilt the suspension and engine, had it painted and chromed, and fixed up the interior. But the car is especially known for the gravity-defying postures it achieves thanks to its hydraulics, which she shows off on the boulevard or at lowrider car events.

Vehicles equipped with hydraulic suspension components (lifts) are referred to as being "juiced." The hydraulic system in “Simply Beautiful” enables the car to hop 45 inches off the ground and achieve a “high three-wheel” stance in which the car lifts one wheel completely off the pavement. The hydraulic pumps with competition motors were built by OneWay Hydraulics and are maintained by Avila’s husband, David.
