| Driving Through Future's Past |
The Bonneville Special was named after the Utah Salt Flats where speed trials are held. Influenced by contemporary aviation design, General Motors stylists endowed the car with a Plexiglas cockpit canopy, simulated jet exhaust openings, and genuine airplane instruments. Two Bonneville Specials were built, both powered by four-carburetor straight-eight engines. They were retired from the show circuit when the overhead-valve Pontiac V-8 was introduced in 1955. Remarkably, both Bonneville Specials survive including this metallic green example, which was used by GM for west coast promotional purposes.
