Driving Through Future's Past
Driving Through Future's PastThe Bonneville Special was named after the Utah Salt Flats where speed trials are held. Influenced by contemporary aviation design, General Motors stylists endowed the car with a Plexiglas cockpit canopy, simulated jet exhaust openings, and genuine airplane instruments. Two Bonneville Specials were built, both powered by four-carburetor straight-eight engines. They were retired from the show circuit when the overhead-valve Pontiac V-8 was introduced in 1955. Remarkably, both Bonneville Specials survive including this metallic green example, which was used by GM for west coast promotional purposes.
