| STEVE McQUEEN: THE LEGEND AND THE CARS |
By 1957, the flashy styling popularized by General Motors design boss Harley Earl had significantly impacted even the low-priced Chevrolet. In 1957 the powerful and reliable 283-cubic inch Chevrolet V-8 engine was offered with optional fuel injection, which raised the horsepower rating to 283 and enabled Chevrolet to boast that the engine produced “one horsepower per cubic inch.” The fuel injection system’s technical sophistication and high power output appealed to actor Steve McQueen, who had become well known for his appreciation of exotic high performance cars.
