Harold James Cleworth is one of the best known automotive artists working today. Born in the industrial North of England during the Second World War, he quickly developed a love for the aesthetics of machinery, and began painting the local Orwellian landscape. He graduated from the prestigious Manchester College of Art in 1967. Cleworth then moved to London, where he worked for Decca records illustrating album covers for the Rolling Stones, The Who, and other groups.
Frustrated with the London scene, Cleworth moved to California in 1972 and began his career as a fine artist, choosing the Automobile, his first love since childhood, as the subject. Chase Manhattan Bank of Zurich bought his first original, and private collectors soon began to commission portraits of their Bugattis, Duesenbergs, and Ferraris. Much of this work has since been exhibited at galleries throughout California. Today Cleworth illustrates new models for Ford, Chevrolet, Saab, Isuzu, and Lincoln Mercury, and has created posters for the Los Angeles and Chicago Auto Shows, and the Newport Beach Concours d'Elegance, at which he is an honorary judge and where the “Cleworth Award” is presented annually.

Auto Week Magazine called Cleworth "the painter laureate of the car." His trademark style of super-realism is instantly recognizable, and his twenty-year dedication to presenting the automobile as art has inspired a generation of enthusiasts.
