1952 So-Cal Speed Shop Special Belly Tank Racer
Second Floor - Industry
American ingenuity at its best, the idea of converting a surplus fuel tank from a P-38 fighter plane into a race car was originated by returning World War II servicemen. The So-Cal Special, created by the founder of the original So- Cal Speed Shop, Alex Xydias, is the most famous of the belly tanks built. It began toppling records as soon as it hit the salt flats and dry lakes, but its most memorable performance came in 1952 at Bonneville when the car shattered five class records using three different Ford flathead ngines.
