Carroll Shelby conceived the idea of the Cobra sports car, which combined European style with American practicality. Built by Shelby American, chassis CSX2323 was one of five FIA -spec factory team cars that competed in the 1964 World Championship. Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant raced the Cobra in the Targa Florio and finished eighth overall and second in the Gt class. After changing hands, the Cobra was driven by Graham Shaw and Dick Thompson who captured first overall at the Virginia International Raceway SCCA Nationals in 1965.
