1989 Porsche 989

First Floor - Artistry

Porsche developed the four-seat 989 in an effort to build on the success of the 928, a large car by Porsche standards that had not yet reached its developmental potential.  While it resembled a traditional rear-engine 911 from the front, the experimental 989 Porsche shared its front V-8 engine and rear-wheel drive layout with the 928 that inspired it.  Intended to compete in the same market segment as certain BMW and Mercedes-Benz models, the 989 project was shelved when it was determined that the market was not yet ready for a “family” Porsche.
