KD6-3.7, also known as “K” (Ryan Gosling), is a Nexus-9 replicant and LAPD Blade Runner tasked with "retiring" outdated Nexus-8 replicants created by the Tyrell Corporation in 2019. As a replicant, K is treated as a slave by his supervisor, Lieutenant Joshi (Robin Wright), and second-class citizen by the LAPD’s “natural born” officers. Although the LAPD has a full fleet of emergency vehicles, K is assigned a Spinner that is an older, beat-up “hand me down” version. However, it is also discreetly painted, which assists in his job of hunting his own kind.

Given its importance to the Blade Runner Universe, the film studio’s art department began by designing the Spinner in the same spirit as those from the older film. Reimagined as a three-wheeled vehicle, with some of the technology originally invented by Syd Mead, the Spinner is an aerodyne patrol car that houses a communication system and bio-scanner. Reminiscent of the first film, the opening scene of Blade Runner 2049 shows K’s Spinner flying over the vast expanse of solar farms that have taken over the Grapevine.
