In 1961 Phil Hill became the only American born Formula One World Champion, driving for Ferrari. His 20 year racing career span was from 1947 though 1967. As he traveled around the world, with his 35mm Leica camera, he was in the unique position to photograph the racing locations, cars and people he experienced and brought these images home to share with family and friends
This book “Inside Track” is built around his very personal and long-private photo collection of motor racing photography. It is an intimate, candid, often exquisitely composed, a superb-quality color record of a bygone age. Phil stories about his racing career are absolutely brim-full of nostalgia, personality, spectacle and drama.
Steve Dawson is a Los Angeles based photographer whose passion is motorsports and was a friend of Phil Hill’s for 30 years. He organized and archived Phil’s Kodachrome slides that he had taken during his long racing career. Together they exhibited his color photographs in displays at the Monterey Historic Races. Steve spent four years recording Phil’s memories and recollections to caption his photographs. In collaboration with Doug Nye and Derek Hill those memories are the basis for the book “Inside Track”.
