1953 Cunningham C-3 By Vignale
American sportsman Briggs Cunningham long dreamed of winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Between 1950 and 1963, he made numerous attempts as both driver and constructor, campaigning cars from his own company and established manufacturers. In 1952, new regulations required Cunningham’s operation to be homologated as a manufacturer by producing 25 road cars. The result was the Cunningham C-3 grand tourer. Built on a modified racing chassis and powered by a Chrysler Hemi V-8, it featured bodywork designed and constructed by coachbuilder Vignale. In 1953, the Museum of Modern Art named the C-3 one of its “10 Best Contemporary Automobiles.”
